Security forces in Ecuador forced their way into the Mexican embassy on Friday (local time) and arrested former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas. Mexico broke off diplomatic relations with Ecuador with immediate effect.
Mexico's Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena declared that the country would appeal to the International Court of Justice.
Ecuador: asylum violates agreement
Glas, who is wanted for corruption, had been staying at the Mexican embassy in the Ecuadorian capital Quito for months. The Mexican Foreign Ministry had announced its intention to grant Glas asylum. The foreign office of the South American country of Ecuador then said that this would violate international agreements. Glas is the subject of an arrest warrant for embezzlement and will not be allowed to leave the country.
Glas was Vice President of Ecuador during the second term of office of left-wing President Rafael Correa (2013-2017) - who has since been convicted of corruption and lives in exile in Belgium - and at the beginning of his successor Lenin Moreno's term of office (2017-2021). At the end of 2017, he was found guilty of accepting bribes in exchange for awarding public contracts to the Brazilian company Odebrecht. He was sentenced to a total of eight years in prison in several corruption trials. He was released early two years ago due to the poor security situation in Ecuador's prisons.
Mexican ambassador unwanted person
It was only on Thursday that the Ecuadorian government of conservative President Daniel Noboa declared the Mexican ambassador an undesirable person. The reason for this was a suggestion by left-wing populist Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador that the murder of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio in Ecuador last August had contributed to Noboa's election victory in October.
