Second division side St. Pölten are starting to clean up after the 3:7 disgrace at Döbling. Coach Semlic: "The burden was obviously too heavy for some of the players who slipped into the team.

Horrible performance or refusal to work, inferior or last class - excerpts of the (mildest) terms used on social media for St. Pölten's 3:7 rebuff at Vienna on Friday, SKN's highest second league defeat since the 1:7 against Kapfenberg in March 2013. The disgrace at Döbling dealt a brutal blow to the Wolves, who started the season as title favorites and quickly faltered. "A final score that leaves us speechless," was the apt headline from the club's own media department on the homepage.
"But that should at most be a small excuse"
For coach Philipp Semlic and his staff, the clean-up began yesterday. They met at 8.30 a.m. in the catacombs of the NV Arena to prepare the analysis. "We had a lot of suspended and injured players, but that should only be a small excuse," explained the coach. "The burden was obviously too heavy for some of the players who slipped into the team." This was particularly the case for Benni Scharner, who hardly gets a chance anyway and was thrown in at the deep end in the unfamiliar position of central defender. A mistake that Semlic corrected at the break - with the score at 0:5 and a four-pack from Kelvin Boateng . . .

It would be far too easy to blame the debacle on the changes. Semlic knows that too: "Because there were others on the pitch who could have been expected to calm the situation down." But they didn't. "I was at least able to draw conclusions for the coming season . . ."

The game certainly did a disservice to the already tense atmosphere at the club. The derby against Admira is next Friday. Some players will return, but Messerer and Riegler, two suspended defensive players, will once again be missing.
