29.5 degrees in Innsbruck
Temperature records: warning of wet snow avalanches
29.5 degrees - Innsbruck was Austria's heat pole on Saturday. The zero-degree limit was at a fabulous 3900 meters, a new danger pattern lurks for ski tourers. On Sunday, the mercury will rise towards 30 degrees.
Forecaster Christoph Mitterer from the Tyrolean Avalanche Warning Service is amazed: "In my 15 years of professional experience, this is the first time that we have had the combination of a high winter snow cover in the high mountains and summer weather at the beginning of April." In fact, there is still an almost record-breaking amount of snow in the Tyrolean mountains. At the same time, temperatures are soaring to unprecedented heights for this time of year. On Saturday, it was 29.5 degrees in Innsbruck, 27.1 in Imst, 26.8 in Patsch and 26.2 in Kufstein.
The rule of skiing an eastern slope before 10 am, a southern slope before 11 am and a western slope before 12 pm does not currently apply.

Zero-degree limit at 3900 meters
It was also incredibly warm at altitude: the zero-degree limit was at 3900 meters. Conclusion from avalanche warning officer Mitterer: "We have more severe spring conditions, there is a threat of wet and sliding snow avalanches." On Saturday, danger level 3 was set for the afternoon in Tyrol - considerable danger. This will also be the case today, Sunday.
Soaking starts earlier
Temperatures are set to rise once again and the sunny weather is attracting many mountaineers to the mountains. April is generally regarded as the most beautiful month for touring. "The rule of skiing an east-facing slope before 10 am, a south-facing slope before 11 am and a west-facing slope before 12 pm does not currently apply," warns Mitterer. "Once again, it means starting and skiing earlier than usual at this time of year." The snow surface doesn't cool down as much during the night and soaking begins earlier. The consequence: wet and sliding snow avalanches that can come loose earlier than usual.
I can't remember a situation at the beginning of April like the one we're experiencing at the moment: snow cover at the height of winter in the high mountains and summer weather. Tourers have to start even earlier than usual.

Will the 30-degree mark fall?
"I'm not ruling out the possibility of the 30-degree mark falling in Tyrol on Sunday," says meteorologist Andreas Demel from the Ubimet weather service. In any case, temperatures will rise again, with only Saharan dust dampening the rise somewhat. "Things will continue in a similar vein on Monday, with cooling on Tuesday evening. Temperatures will then reach 15 to 17 degrees, which would be 'normal' for early April."
From today's perspective, however, things will turn around again next weekend. The mercury will once again make its way up to exceptionally high levels.
