Blockade stopped
Climate protest: Thunberg arrested twice
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has been temporarily arrested twice by the police in The Hague in the Netherlands during street blockades.
Thunberg had initially joined around 100 demonstrators in an attempt by the group Extinction Rebellion (XR) to block a highway in the center of the Dutch city on Saturday, as reported by the Dutch news agency ANP.
When a police contingent kept the demonstrators away from the highway, they blocked another road nearby. Thunberg and other activists were arrested there and taken away on a bus.
Thunberg: "Arrest proceeded peacefully"
The climate activist told the news agency by telephone that her arrest was peaceful. "But that's not the point, I'm here because of the climate goal."
She felt that she was able to get her message across well in The Hague. "People have been promised action for decades. Nothing is happening. We'll see if it works now."
Thunberg: another blockade after her release
After the police released Thunberg, she returned to the center of The Hague and took part in another blockade, whereupon officers again temporarily arrested her.
On Saturday, the Extinction Rebellion group attempted to block the A12 highway through the center of The Hague for the 37th time since the start of their protests last year.
The activists want the Netherlands to cut all state subsidies for fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas.
