Persiflage on Hitler

Alleged Nazi flags “decorate” the Burgtheater

Ten supposed Nazi banners were unveiled at the Burgtheater in Vienna on Saturday evening. Instead of a swastika, however, each flag is emblazoned with the likeness of a Great Dane. With this action, the artist Flatz is commemorating Hitler's "Pearl Speech" 86 years ago.

This also includes the replica Hitler balcony from the town hall opposite, which is now temporarily located at the Burgtheater (see video above). Bibiana Beglau, dressed as Hitler, can be seen there on a LED screen in a loop. The balcony is therefore not a live performance, which reflects the situation on April 9, 1938.

Speech before the Anschluss
Back then, Adolf Hitler gave his "Pearl Speech" in the ballroom of Vienna City Hall on the eve of the vote to annex Austria to Germany and not on the balcony, which was still provisionally erected at the time, as the digital art initiative Memory Gaps showed with five interventions between 2018 and 2020. On the wooden exit, Hitler merely accepted the cheers of the crowd.

"Hitler, a dog's life"
Even though Bibiana Beglau could not be seen in person on the balcony pendant at the castle, she could be seen on stage as the Nazi party leader. The exhibition "Hitler, a dog's life" in the 2nd interval foyer, conceived by Flatz, completes the trio of reminders of the "Pearl Speech".

Its name goes back to a passage from the town hall speech in which Hitler said the following about Vienna: "This city is a pearl in my eyes - I will bring it into the form that is worthy of this pearl (...)." While the temporarily redecorated Burgtheater can only be seen up to and including Monday, the show in the foyer will be on display until the end of May.
