After the Danka case (2):
Vucic calls for the reintroduction of the death penalty
Serbia's President Aleksandar Vučić is calling for the reintroduction of the death penalty in his country. The specific reason for this statement is the case of the missing two-year-old girl Danka.
In this context, two men were initially arrested on Thursday who had admitted to the girl's death in a traffic accident.
Danka case: suspect (40) dies during interrogation
Two close relatives of one of the alleged perpetrators were also arrested on Saturday. One of them, a 40-year-old man, died in custody last night.
The doctor in charge determined a natural cause of death, while the public prosecutor's office ordered an autopsy of the body, according to media reports, as reported by TV station N1.
Vučić had already campaigned for the reintroduction of the death penalty a year ago, when 19 people were killed in two massacres in Belgrade and Mladenovac.
Death penalty abolished in Serbia in 2022
He had been informed by the government that a reintroduction would not be possible, he said at the time. The death penalty was abolished in Serbia in 2002. Serbia's president is known for frequently exceeding his rather modest powers. Prime Minister-designate Miloš Vučević is considered one of his closest collaborators.
