Earlier than ever!
First heatwave day for the history books
April 7, 2024 will go down in history with a temperature of exactly 30 degrees. Never before - since records began - has it been so warm so early in the year. The heat pole: Bruck an der Mur in Styria.
What a fantastic weekend it was! The sun shone mostly unclouded from a cloudless sky and the thermometer climbed to the 30 degree mark. So it's hardly surprising that the pavement cafés up and down the country were bursting at the seams and many a Viennese sought to cool off in the Old Danube. Just summer.

Neck-and-neck race for the temperature record
But wait! Yesterday was April 7. A day on which winter tires are actually still mandatory. But it was also a day that has now found its way into the meteorological history books. Never before has a really hot day been recorded so early in the year and the previous record was virtually pulverized: On April 17, 1934, meteorologists recorded 30 degrees in the city of Salzburg; this year, the mark was beaten by ten days.
Lake Zell in Salzburg had an unusually high number of bathers for the time of year:
Incidentally, several measuring stations were in a close race over the course of Sunday. Reichenau an der Rax (Lower Austria) was ahead for a long time, but slowed down at 29.8 degrees.
Hotter here than in Egypt and southern Europe
Shortly before 4 p.m., it was Bruck an der Mur in Styria that cracked the 30 mark and thus secured itself a place in the annals. Yesterday was hotter here than in Madrid, Istanbul, Athens or even Cairo in Egypt.
Although the majority of the country probably enjoyed the glorious weather to the full, critical voices could not be ignored: "What will it be like at the height of summer?" warns Jasmin Duregger, climate expert at the environmental protection organization Greenpeace. "Climate protection measures are the order of the day. We need to combat the soil erosion that leads to heat islands and insulate homes to keep the heat outside for longer."
By the way: from Wednesday it will be cooler again, temperatures will adjust to the season ...
