"3 direct hits"
Russia: Ukraine drone hits Zaporizhia nuclear power plant
Ukraine has apparently attacked the Russian-controlled nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia with drones. One exploded on the dome of a power plant unit, but caused no damage, according to the administration appointed by Russia on Sunday. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that there were "three direct hits". "This is a no-go", warned IAEA chief Rafael Mariano Grossi.
According to Grossi, "at least three direct hits against the safety hull of the main reactor of the nuclear power plant" have been confirmed. "This must not happen", he explained on Platform X. It is urgently recommended to refrain from actions that endanger nuclear safety.
Here, IAEA chief Rafael Mariano Grossi talks about the incident on X:
Truck damaged near plant canteen
According to the Russian-appointed administration of the Ukrainian power plant, three employees were injured in the shelling, while the IAEA confirmed only one casualty (see article below). According to the nuclear power plant administration, another drone also damaged a truck near the canteen of the power plant. However, radiation levels at the six reactors are normal, it said.
The nuclear power plant is located near the front line. Both sides have often accused each other of firing on the plant. Reuters is unable to verify the veracity of these claims.
Kiev: Three dead from Russian attacks in Zaporizhia region
According to Ukrainian reports, Russian attacks claimed the lives of several civilians on Sunday. Three people were killed in the frontline village of Guliaipole in the Zaporizhzhia region. The Russian forces had shelled the village with multiple rocket launchers of the Grad type, it was reported. According to official information, at least five civilians were killed by Russian artillery fire in the Ukrainian-controlled part of the Donetsk region.
Victims died "under the rubble of their own house"
"Two men and a woman died under the rubble of their own house, which was hit by a Russian shell," said Ivan Fedorov, the governor of the Zaporizhzhya region in south-eastern Ukraine, on the short messaging service Telegram. Another person was injured. The frontline region of Zaporizhia is under constant Russian rocket, drone and artillery fire.
Five civilians killed in Donetsk region
At least five civilians had previously been reported dead in the Ukrainian-controlled part of the Donetsk region. The regional Ukrainian public prosecutor's office announced on Saturday evening that a minor was among the victims in the Pokrovsk district. Two people were injured. On the other hand, the authorities in the Russian-occupied regional capital of Donetsk reported eleven people injured by Ukrainian shelling. The district of Pokrovsk lies just a few kilometers from the front to the west of Donetsk. Residential buildings in several villages were hit.
