Military vehicle overturned after crash on A1
On Sunday evening, a serious traffic accident involving a military vehicle on the Westautobahn caused a traffic jam several kilometers long. The two injured occupants were transported to hospital.
For as yet unexplained reasons, an armored military vehicle collided with a crash barrier on the A1 in the direction of Vienna on Sunday evening and overturned. Two soldiers were in the military police vehicle, which is used for transportation, patrol, command and reconnaissance purposes, at the time of the accident.
Soldier seriously injured
One of the two occupants suffered serious injuries in the crash, while the other only sustained minor injuries. According to initial information, the latter was able to climb through the roof hatch on his own. He was also able to free his comrade from the vehicle via the roof hatch and provided first aid until the emergency services arrived.
The two soldiers were transported to hospital. It is still unclear why the military vehicle collided with the crash barrier. The exact cause will be the subject of a military investigation, according to reports.
Kilometre-long traffic jam
The alerted fire departments assisted the emergency services and then worked with the military police to recover the vehicle involved in the accident. The crash caused a traffic jam several kilometers long on the Westautobahn in the direction of Vienna, two lanes were closed. Drivers had to allow around 20 minutes extra travel time.
