Dystopian USA
Win tickets for the premiere of “Civil War”!
A snapshot of a once unthinkable development: from April 18, "Civil War" will be showing exclusively in cinemas a deeply shattered USA in which civil war is raging. krone.tv and krone.at are giving away tickets for the Austrian premiere of the action drama by Alex Garland with Kirsten Dunst on April 16 at the Village Cinema Wien Mitte.
"Civil War" shows us a dystopian near future in which a civil war rages in the USA, dividing the country into two camps. While the US President (Nick Offerman, "The Last of Us") has started his third term in office in the White House, Texas, California and 17 other states in the west of the country are rebelling against the government.
Although the latter responds to the uprisings with airstrikes regardless of casualties, the western forces are moving towards Washington. Their goal is to take control of the White House by the US Independence Day on July 4th.
Who can be trusted in the midst of a civil war?
Like the insurgent units, photojournalist Lee (Kirsten Dunst, "Fargo", "The Power of the Dog") and her colleague Joel (Wagner Moura, "Narcos"), along with veteran reporter Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson) and ambitious photographer Jessie (Cailee Spaeny), are trying to cross the war zone and get to the capital. But who can they trust in the midst of a civil war?
Kirsten Dunst: "Like a cautionary tale"
As they travel across the country, the film, which in some ways is as much a road movie as a war movie, reveals a new reality that turns out, in an increasingly disturbing way, to be exactly what Lee had been warning about all her life. "This movie feels like a fable to me - like a cautionary fable about what happens when people don't communicate with each other," says Dunst ahead of the movie's release. "When no one listens to each other, when journalists are silenced, when we lose a shared truth."
The London-based writer and director of "Civil War", Alex Garland ("Annilihation", "Ex Machina"), had the idea for the film when he was pondering whether it would be possible for a brutal conflict to reduce a completely unprepared country to rubble. As radical as the film may be, Garland simply hopes that viewers will go into the movie with an open mind, leave the theater without feeling alienated, and perhaps think through our tricky political situation against this backdrop.
