On patrol with boats
With the start of the swimming season: water police set sail
The swimming pools in Carinthia are officially open from May 1st at the latest - and at the same time, the 70 officers of the water police start their operational season!
The countdown is on: The swimming season at Carinthia's lakes opens in three weeks' time. This is also the time when the water police launch their eight patrol boats into the water. "We have eight boats with 150 to 250 hp in our 'fleet'. Three are stationed on Lake Wörthersee and one each on Lake Ossiach, Lake Millstatt and Lake Klopein. There are also two boats on the reservoirs in Feistritz and Völkermarkt," says Peter Wallner, head of the Carinthian water police, in an interview with the "Krone" newspaper.
Laser measuring devices are also on board from time to time. To measure the speed, but also the distance to the shore protection zone.
Peter Wallner, Chef der Kärntner Wasserpolizei
With 70 specially trained officers, Carinthia, as the "Land of Lakes", naturally has the largest number of personnel on the water in Austria. And the tasks are wide-ranging: from severe weather operations (maritime emergencies) to the daily patrol service in accordance with Section 6 of the Maritime Navigation Act (e.g. speeding violations, non-observance of regulations): Speed violations, non-compliance with the distance to the shore or reed belt) to accident investigations.
Alcohol checks on the water too
The breathalyzer is also always on board. "Even stricter rules apply in this respect than in road traffic. From 0.5 per mille upwards, there are no more gradations on the water. And what most people don't realize is that the blood alcohol limit applies to all watercraft - including stand-up paddlers and pedal boaters," warns Wallner. This does not mean that every water sports enthusiast is always checked. "However, if you violate regulations or are obviously drunk, you have to expect an alcohol check."
