Gölles Manufactory
Apple balsamic vinegar: Styrian success story turns 40
Balsam for the soul: The success story of Gölles Manufaktur from Styria is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year with the creation of apple balsamic vinegar, a unique product worldwide. It all started with an idea - a real "schnapps idea", to be precise ...
Apples, plums, pears, quinces and more thrive in the region around the imposing Riegersburg castle in Styria. Gölles, the manufactory for fine brandy and vinegar, was founded there at the end of the 1950s, when Alois Gölles senior dedicated himself to cultivating fruit trees on the sunny south-eastern slope.
Pioneer in the production of fine brandies and vinegars
This decision laid the foundation for the later manufactory. Starting with the processing of fruit into wine and juice, the company developed into a pioneer in the production of brandies and vinegars.
Family business in the third generation
2024 marks a special anniversary for the third-generation family business: 40 years ago, the first apple balsamic vinegar was served - a product that shaped the vinegar market worldwide. The Austrian family business Gölles, synonymous with dedication and passion for craftsmanship, is revolutionizing the world of fine cuisine in top Austrian gastronomy with its high-quality vinegars and opening up new culinary horizons with its exquisite creations.
"Even as a child, I understood that the quality of our products depends directly on the quality of our fruit," recalls the current Managing Director Alois Gölles Jr. The constant striving for improvement still forms the foundation of the company's success today.
100 percent pure fruit
Gölles stands for products that are made from 100 percent pure fruit in the company's own factory in south-eastern Styria. Each product reflects the deep connection with nature and the orchard in which Alois Gölles jun. grew up. The fruit that ends up in the stills and vinegar barrels is of the highest quality - free from additives and ripened under the Styrian sun. From classic apple and pear brandies to unique creations such as Saubirne, Vogelbeer or Hirschbirne, Gölles offers a variety that delights experts and connoisseurs alike. Creative vinegar creations such as tomato, asparagus, beer or quince vinegar as well as the unique apple balsamic vinegar are evidence of the family company's innovative streak.
Around 150,000 liters of vinegar are produced each year
Alois Gölles jun. distilled his first brandies back in 1979 and finally laid the foundations for the first premium vinegar from Styria in 1984. He hit the jackpot straight away: the apple balsamic vinegar, a unique product worldwide. For the first time, balsamic vinegar was not made from grapes but from apples, a creation that was only imitated 15 years later. Aged for eight years in oak barrels, characterized by harmonious apple aromas and paired with ripe barrel notes, the apple balsamic vinegar from Gölles is in no way inferior to the best Italian balsamic vinegars in terms of taste and charm. Around 150,000 liters of vinegar are produced in the manufactory every year and Gölles' dedication to quality has made it famous beyond the borders of Styria, including in top gastronomy.
19 types of vinegar, 20 different brandies
Today, the range includes a rich variety of 19 unusual vinegars and around 20 different brandies, which regularly receive high recognition and awards from experts.
Gölles conquers the hearts of top chefs
The outstanding quality and extensive product range of the Gölles manufactory have long since won the hearts of top chefs and gourmets throughout Austria. In renowned award-winning restaurants such as the Steirereck Wien or the Steirereck Pogusch, Gölles is an integral part of the exquisite cuisine. Here, both the wide range of vinegars and the fine brandies from Gölles are highly appreciated.
Range expanded to include spirits
The family is not content to look back on its Austrian family history and past achievements, but is looking forward to a promising future. The next generation, represented by son David, brings a breath of fresh air to the manufactory and expands the range to include modern spirits such as rum, gin and whiskey - under the brand name "David Gölles". With regard to the future, Gölles is dynamic, driven by the next generation of the family: "Our aim is to continue the tradition, but also to break new ground, for example by expanding our range to include modern spirits."
