Houseboat sails through San Francisco Bay

A highly unusual sight recently presented itself to the residents of San Francisco Bay in the US state of California. A two-storey houseboat sailed through the bay of the Pacific Ocean. Its owners had had to move for legal reasons ...

Footage (see video above) shows how the floating, shingle-clad wooden house was towed through the open sea to its new destination, the city of San Rafael, on Tuesday. Its occupants had been forced to leave the Docktown Marina in nearby Redford City. The marina there had once housed more than 100 houseboats.

According to local media reports, the Redwood City Council asked the residents of the houseboats in the marina to leave because their boats were blocking public access to a state waterway. As part of an ongoing lawsuit, the city has paid the residents of the boathouses several million dollars to get them to move.

Coast Guard oversaw the transfer
The houseboat had been the second-to-last floating home in the Redwood City marina, according to SFGate, a San Francisco-based news website. The U.S. Coast Guard oversaw the transfer of the boathouse, which was being pulled by a smaller towboat as it slipped through the waters of the bay.
