Struggling mother
“I don’t need thanks, I urgently need help”
Michaela Schäffer (57) has been caring for her severely disabled son Sven at home for 24 years. And, as reported, against all the resistance and hurdles placed in her way. Even the well-known life and social counselor Margreth Tews, who is also very active in protecting children, is stunned.
"I've been following this case for years. What is being done to the woman is unbelievable. They already wanted to evict her and sued her. They just want her to put Sven in a home," she says in an interview with the "Krone" newspaper. She suspects a kind of "system" behind this. Because associations and social institutions are heavily subsidized by the state, they want to place as many children and disabled people as possible in their institutions, Tews accuses. "But this is many times more expensive. In a home, accommodation costs between 36,000 and 50,000 euros per person per month," argues the combative mediator.
"I'm actually at the end"
For Michaela Schäffer, who desperately needs a personal assistant for Sven, time is running out. "I'm actually at the end of my tether. I can't even go to the doctor because I don't have anyone to look after Sven during this time. I can't leave him alone because of his epileptic seizures," she says, frustrated.
Case to be reviewed again
It doesn't help her much that she recently received a letter from LH Thomas Stelzer in which he expressed his appreciation for her efforts: "I don't need thanks, I need help." At least Stelzer has assured her that her case will be re-examined.
