Heartwarming
The children stole the show from the stars in Augusta
It's one of the best family celebrations in sport! At the Par 3 contest of the US Masters in Augusta, the pros and spectators celebrate a golf party with lots of fun. Every year, the children steal the show from the superstars. Legendary coach Claude Grenier, who is in Augusta at the invitation of his former protégé Sepp Straka, reports for the "Krone".
Players and spectators celebrate a wonderful family party on their own beautiful course with nine par 3 holes. The stars have their wives and children with them. The contact with the fans is very close. And every year, the youngsters steal the show from the pros. Sometimes the children use the course as a playground. Sand bunkers quickly become sandpits (see below). This is shown here by Rickie Fowler's daughter and Jordan Spieth's son.
Jordan Spieth's son was also interested in the game of golf. And thrilled the spectators with a shot worth seeing.
Bubba Watson's daughter showed real talent. Dakota sank three difficult putts. And she is also very good at celebrating (see video).
Great emotions for Sepp
Sepp Straka will also have his son Leo with him when he is a little older. This year, wife Paige accompanied Sepp as caddie, while grandma Mary looked after Leo. Sepp played a strong contest. His highlight was a hole-in-one on the fifth hole. An ace like that is always a mixture of tremendous skill and a bit of luck. Former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who was the first woman to be admitted to the elite Augusta National Golf Club in 2012, cheered along with Straka. Sepp also showed great emotion and treated himself to a small Dosa Coca Cola Light after the celebrations.
Bad omen for winner Fowler
In the end, Sepp finished tied second with three under par. First place and the trophy went to Rickie Fowler. But that is a bad omen. Because never before has the winner of the par 3 contest, which has been held since 1960, gone on to win the Masters.
Daughter watched from the sky
But the winner of hearts at the Par 3 Contest was Camilo Villegas. He had a great time with his children. His daughter Mia, who died of cancer in 2020, watched from above. Watch the emotional video below.
Scandal noodle Daly is also there
Another tradition in Augusta is that the legendary scandal noodle John Daly sells souvenirs in a parking lot near the famous "Hooters" restaurant. He's looking pretty wild now with his beard. I once played 18 holes with him in Munich-Eichenried. I remember clearly that he drank a lot of Coke, snacked on lots of M&Ms and smoked several cigarettes, but also played very good golf.
