Next surprise
Medvedev out in the round of 16 in Monte Carlo!
Daniil Medvedev has been knocked out in the last 16 of the Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo. The world number four was defeated 3:6, 5:7 by the Russian Karen Khachanov on Thursday. Last year's Vienna finalist never really got going against his compatriot. Alexander Zverev is also out, the German number four seed in the Principality lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas 5:7, 6:7(3). Top seeds Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner are through to the quarter-finals.
The Serb beat Lorenzo Musetti 7:5, 6:3 to take revenge on the Italian for his surprising exit in the round of 16 in Monte Carlo last year. Musetti did manage the first break in the rematch, but after that the world number one decided the decisive scenes in his favor, managed to break back late on and also remained unchallenged in the second set. Djokovic will now face Australian Alex de Minaur in the round of the top eight.
"It gets out of hand every now and then!"
In balanced baseline fights, Medvedev had a set point at 5:4 in the second set, but missed the chance and lost his nerve. "Open your damn eyes," Medvedev first shouted to the umpire and then received a penalty point. "I know Daniil gets angry sometimes. Sometimes he uses it as a tool, but it also gets out of control from time to time," said Khachanov, who is in the quarter-finals of Monte Carlo for the first time.
There he will meet Stefanos Tsitsipas, who eliminated Alexander Zverev 7:5, 7:6. The German came back from 0-5 down in the second set, fended off two match points, but again made too many mistakes in the tie-break. Tsitsipas spoke afterwards of an "adventure", saying that he doesn't experience a match like this "every day". The course of the match was "very unusual". "I'm just trying to find out what happened."
Djokovic takes revenge on Musetti
Top seed Novak Djokovic is also in the quarter-finals.
Sinner had the fewest problems of the top five. The Australian Open winner from South Tyrol won 6:4, 6:2 against the German Jan-Lennard Struff. Sinner thus continues his winning run on clay, with his next opponent being Holger Rune from Denmark. The tournament's number seven won against the Bulgarian Gregor Dimitrov after a tough battle 7:6(9),3:6,7:6(2). Rune and Dimitrov had only successfully played their second round matches early on Thursday afternoon.
