Shipyard project is still a long time coming

The insolvency-stricken Signa Group is leaving the city of Korneuburg leaning on the mega-project. The mayor refers to "talks". The future of the 15-hectare site remains uncertain.

The Elbtower in Hamburg, the Lamarr shopping temple and the 500 million euro shipyard project in Korneuburg have one thing in common: they all went into a tailspin due to the collapse of René Benko's Signa.

 "At least we don't have any ruined buildings on the Danube now," is how one resident of the Lower Austrian district capital sums up the situation in Korneuburg.

But what will become of the planned new city district, which was to offer space for up to 1,700 residents and was unveiled with much pomp in 2021? A question that even Mayor Christian Gepp (ÖVP) cannot answer. He only told the APA that the city is still in contact with the project company: "But for now, we'll just have to wait and see."

"Savings option" for multi-million euro project
The project was only downsized in the summer of 2023. However, it was never revealed exactly what the "savings variant" would have looked like. Because before the plans were finalized, Signa collapsed like a house of cards ...
