Tragic accident
Cyclist (56) suffered fatal injuries
Numerous emergency services rushed to an accident in Bregenz in the early hours of Thursday afternoon. However, all help came too late for the 56-year-old cyclist who had been hit by an SUV. He succumbed to his serious injuries at the scene of the accident.
The course of the accident could not have been more unfortunate: At around 12.30 p.m., a 69-year-old SUV driver was driving on Römerstraße in the direction of Lauterach. At the Landhaus, the man suddenly lost consciousness for an as yet unexplained reason and slumped forward with his upper body. The out-of-control off-road vehicle swerved to the right, overtook a female moped rider and then hit a 56-year-old biker who was riding on a marked cycle path with full force - the passenger of the incapacitated driver tried to turn the steering wheel, but failed.
Resuscitation unsuccessful
The SUV itself drove on for around 350 meters before coming to a standstill - the 69-year-old had regained consciousness in the meantime. He immediately ran back to the scene of the accident and identified himself as the driver. The cyclist had already been resuscitated at this point, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly afterwards.
As there are still many unanswered questions regarding the course of the accident, an expert was called in and a drone was also used.
