Alfa Romeo Milano: Italy is the main thing?
"Milan or Madrid, the main thing is Italy" is probably one of the most legendary soccer quotes (from the then German professional footballer Andy Möller). Why does this come to mind when we think of the Alfa Romeo Milano? Well, national identity is one of those things in the international multi-brand group Stellantis.
Okay, it's not Spanish, the Milano, but its platform runs right across the Stellantis brands. After all, it also carries the new Lancia Ypsilon. Unlike the latter, however, the Alfa Romeo Milano will also be sold in Austria. But first things first.
It took 114 years for Alfa Romeo to name a car after its home city of Milan for the first time. Now, finally, the last shells of the new Milano have fallen in the Lombard metropolis. Unlike the city of millions, however, the car is rather small - just 4.17 meters long. And the "city sign" is only emblazoned on the sides between the fender and door rebate. At the rear, "Alfa Romeo" is simply written in curved lettering.
There is talk of a "Compact Sports Car", "after all, an Alfa Romeo has always been aimed at people who choose their car not only on the basis of rational considerations but also from an emotional point of view", enthuses the marketing department. This orientation can be seen in the details, on the one hand in the design and on the other in the equipment, which includes optional Sabelt sports seats.
Emotional, yes, but the emotions aroused by the Milano will not be exclusively positive for all Alfisti. One thing is certain: The look is quite distinctive, even if the front may be reminiscent of the Renault Clio from some angles. In the middle - as on all Alfas - is the Scudetto, the coat of arms, albeit in a very unclassical design. This time it is available in two versions (called Leggenda and Progresso), both of which take some getting used to. Particularly striking at the front are the many LED light slits, which are more reminiscent of other Stellantis vehicles than of earlier Alfa Romeos.
The rear is reminiscent of the Kia EV6, which in turn drew its inspiration from the legendary Lancia Stratos - in this respect, the designers can certainly be credited with sporty and emotional intentions, i.e. good ones.
The cockpit is certainly one of the most beautiful currently on offer in this class. A 10.25-inch display integrated into round instrument tubes, plus a central touchscreen of the same size, which is not superimposed but sits harmoniously in the dashboard. Below this is a row of real buttons, but no rotary controls. No touch elements on the steering wheel either, but real buttons. That's a good thing! The unit with drive selector and drive mode switch etc. is familiar from other models.
Drives shaped by reason
The drive portfolio is dominated by common sense, especially the electric part - although opinions can differ given the small battery size. The electric version delivers either 115 kW (156 PS) or 177 kW (240 PS), but only has a 54 kWh battery with a maximum charging capacity of just 100 kW. With the weaker motor, it promises a WLTP range of around 410 km, while the more powerful one is likely to cover less than 400 kilometers.
A petrol engine is also available. It is called Ibrida (hybrid) and combines a 1.2-liter 136 hp three-cylinder engine with a 21 kW electric motor to create a 48-volt hybrid system that is integrated into the six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Ibrida will also be available with electrified all-wheel drive at a later date.
Fun comes from the chassis
There is a choice of two chassis for the Milano. The top-of-the-range model in the Veloce equipment version has a 25 mm lowered sports suspension, reinforced stabilizers on the front and rear axles, sports brakes with four-piston monobloc callipers and 380 millimetre brake discs on the front axle, a mechanical Torsen limited slip differential and 20-inch tires.
Inner values
The electric version has a 400-liter trunk, which is supplemented by a frunk for the charging cable. In terms of electronics, there is Level 2 automated driving, an automatic keyless entry system and a control system that integrates ChatGPT.
Prices Alfa Romeo will be announced shortly at the start of ordering.
