Relief supplies arrive via new crossing
Israel's army has delivered the first aid supplies via a new crossing to the north of the Gaza Strip. Trucks entered the area, the army announced on Friday. Israel has recently been under heavy pressure to improve humanitarian supplies to the sealed-off coastal area.
The trucks were checked at the border crossing on the border with Egypt and then continued north. What was brought into the Gaza Strip and the exact location of the new crossing was not initially disclosed. At the beginning of April, Israel's army announced that it would reopen the Erez border crossing, which had been closed since the Hamas massacre on October 7.
The responsible Israeli Cogat authority also confirmed that a new crossing had been opened. The roads are said to be unpaved. It was initially unclear whether this was the Erez crossing. This was intended for people until the start of the war, but had been badly damaged. Many Israelis were also killed there. Media reports later mentioned a crossing a few kilometers west of Erez.
Situation in the north particularly precarious
The situation for the remaining residents in the north is particularly precarious. Aid organizations are warning of a famine. Under increasing international pressure, Israel's army had announced that it would allow more aid supplies into the embattled area.
According to the Hamas health authority, 33,634 people have died since the start of the war and more than 76,200 others have been injured. This was triggered by the massacre carried out by Hamas and other terrorist organizations in Israel on 7 October 2023. More than 1,200 people lost their lives. Israel's army responded with massive air strikes and a ground offensive.
