Ministry: Austrians should leave Iran
The Austrian Foreign Ministry is now calling on citizens to leave Iran. The conflict with Israel threatens to escalate.
On Friday evening, the Foreign Ministry set the travel warning level for Iran to level six and thus directly called on all citizens to leave the country: "Due to the current tense situation in the region, an increased risk can be assumed, especially in the coming days. Austrians staying in the country are called upon to exercise particular caution."
A spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry explained on Friday evening that a travel warning had been in place for the country for some time. What is new is the reference to the increased risk due to the current tense situation.
AUA suspends flights
Despite the travel warning, AUA had also operated flights to Tehran. These were initially suspended on Friday until next Thursday. Previously, AUA's parent company Lufthansa had also canceled its flights to and from Tehran. In the evening, the German Foreign Ministry also announced that it was calling on nationals to leave Iran.
The background to the updated travel advice is the growing tension between Iran and Israel. The Mullah regime has announced a retaliatory strike against Israel after high-ranking Iranian commanders were killed in the Iranian embassy in Damascus. According to media reports, the retaliatory strike is imminent. The US army has therefore increased its troop presence in the region, and US President Joe Biden urgently warned Iran against attacking Israel.
