"Speaking in tongues"
Prayers for abortion ban in Arizona Senate
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court of the US state of Arizona declared an abortion ban from 1864 to be valid (see video above). This prohibits all abortions unless the life of the pregnant woman is in danger. A prayer group had previously attracted attention in the Senate with a bizarre ritual.
They prayed in an otherwise deserted room. According to US media reports, the incident took place on Monday, one day before the decision. Footage shows people kneeling over the seal of the state, gesticulating and speaking unintelligible words. It is said to be a ritual called speaking in tongues, which is popular among evangelical groups.
Here you can see a video of the incident.
Senator joined in the prayers
The group was supported by Republican Senator Anthony Kern, who shouts, among other things, "Let it be so, Father God." Kern confirmed his participation and stated that he had prayed for the 1864 abortion ban. "It looks like our prayer team stirred up some God haters," he wrote on the X platform.
The reactions to the video on X are predominantly negative. For example, users ask why this is even allowed in a government building, or note that higher education would solve this problem.
More sterilizations since abortion bans
The nationwide right to abortion in the USA (from 1973) was overturned in 2022. Since then, around 20 conservative states have completely abolished or at least restricted the right.
According to a new study, there are now significantly more sterilizations than before, especially among women. One of the authors of the study, Jacqueline Ellison from the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health, attributes this to the increased responsibility of women to prevent unwanted pregnancies.
High costs, complex procedure
However, the operations for women are significantly more complex and two to six times more expensive than for men. A complex procedure is also required for reversal of sterilization. The study focused on 18 to 30-year-olds and used medical data from large centers and hospitals.
In Austria, the cost for women can be up to 2000 euros, for men it is up to 1000 euros for a vasectomy. The procedure is legally permitted from the age of 25. Abortions are exempt from punishment within the first three months.
