How does Israel react?
For Iran, “the matter is closed”
The Iranian armed forces attacked Israel directly for the first time on Sunday night (see video above). Should there be a counter-attack, a "major strike" will follow, the Iranian regime announced. However, it is still unclear how Israel will react. There is talk of a "significant response".
If this fails to materialize, the "matter can be considered closed", said the Iranian UN representative in New York. The attack on Israel with more than 200 drones and missiles was an appropriate response to the killing of two Iranian generals in an airstrike on the Tehran embassy (Syria) at the beginning of April. However, if Israeli attacks on Iranian "interests, representatives or citizens" were to follow, an even "bigger blow" than last night's would follow.
Warning to the USA
The regime also warned the US government to support Israel in the event of a possible retaliatory attack. The American bases would then also be targeted, it said. "The reason for this operation was the crossing of red lines by the Zionist regime, which was not acceptable to us," said Iran's Chief of General Staff Mohammed Bagheri. The term "Zionist regime" refers to Israel.
The Iranian armed forcesreportedly fired more than 300 missiles and drones at Israel last night. 99 percent of them were shot down, army spokesman Daniel Hagari said on Sunday morning. Many missiles were also intercepted by the US army, which is present in Iraq, among other places. At the same time, there were also attacks by the Lebanese Hezbollah militia and the Yemeni Houthi rebels.
Israeli army: "Clear escalation"
Israel's military spoke of a "clear escalation" due to the use of ballistic missiles. The interception of the missiles and drones was a "very significant strategic success". None of the 170 drones and 30 cruise missiles had reached Israeli territory, and only a few of the 120 missiles had succeeded in doing so. Hagari thanked both the USA and France for their support.
"Together we will win," Netanyahu wrote in Hebrew via X:
In the morning, both Israel and Jordan reopened their airspace. In the meantime, the Israeli population in the north and south had been asked to stay close to shelters. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrote on Platform X: "We intercepted, we repelled, together we will win."
