Became 62 years old
Oldest conjoined twins die
Twins Lori and George Schappell, who were conjoined at the head from birth in 1961, have died in the USA. They were thought to be the oldest living conjoined twins in the world. Despite their special situation, the two lived very different lives. They lived to be more than twice as old as doctors had predicted.
According to Guinness World Records, Lori and George were the "oldest living conjoined twins and oldest female conjoined twins of all time". George was born Dori and only decided to live as a man in 2007. According to "Guinness World Records", this had never happened before either.
Dating was no problem for conjoined twins
Lori and George were conjoined at the temples and shared 30 percent of their frontal lobe and important blood vessels, making separation impossible. Despite these impairments, the two emphasized that they lead a normal - and separate - life.
"We travel, clean our apartment ourselves and Lori even had a boyfriend. Nothing stops us from doing what we want," says George, describing their life. When Lori had appointments, George would occupy himself with puzzles or books. He would distract himself so much that he could even ignore his sister kissing someone.
Their interests were also very different. George was a country singer who had even performed in Japan and Germany. Lori, on the other hand, loved bowling and could win a few trophies.
Each twin had their own room
"When we were born, the doctors didn't think we'd live to be 30, but we proved them wrong," Lori told The Sun in 2011. They lived in a two-bedroom apartment where each had a room to themselves. One night they slept in Lori's room and the other night in George's.
The two would not have wanted to separate, even if it had been possible. "Should we be separated? Absolutely not. My theory is: why fix what isn't broken?" explained George in a documentary about the special pair of twins.
