Winzig fights against roaming as a cost trap
EU parliamentarian Angelika Winzig (ÖVP) wants to close roaming loopholes by extending the Union's cost-protecting regulation to Switzerland, the UK and the Western Balkans.
Suddenly, making cell phone calls in the EU was no longer a kind of Russian roulette with high costs: on June 15, 2017, roaming charges were abolished in the countries of the European Union. Paul Rübig, a long-standing MEP from the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), played a leading role in this. His party colleague Angelika Winzig was then chief negotiator when these roaming agreements were extended by ten years two years ago.
Next step on the agenda
Winzig now wants to take the next step and, as she says, plug the last roaming holes. After all, anyone traveling to non-EEA European countries such as Switzerland, the UK or the Western Balkans still has to pay the full roaming costs.
The ÖVP delegation leader is now calling for the EU regulation to be extended to these countries.
"In an increasingly connected world, high roaming costs are unreasonable for people. We want to end the roaming cost trap."

Ukraine should also be included in the future
In the case of the Western Balkan states, steps have already been taken in this direction and the EU Commission is working on abolishing roaming surcharges here. "We are also calling for agreements to be concluded with other countries such as Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Ukraine that allow roaming at domestic prices," Winzig urges for more speed. The issue must also be a fixed project in the next EU legislative period, which starts on July 16.
