Military strategist warns
“Israel faces the dilemma of a response”
After Iran's attack, Israel is faced with the dilemma of how to respond. "There has to be a response and there are two options," analyzes Colonel Markus Reisner from the Austrian Armed Forces. "Either a hard response, such as destroying central facilities, or a soft response similar to what Iran has done."
In any case, the fact is that Israel is now fighting on three fronts: against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, against Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon and against Iran itself. "You could even name a fourth front, namely all Israeli missions worldwide. They are in danger," Reisner tells "Krone".
USA does not want an escalation
There are indications that the US is urging Israel not to retaliate, says Reisner. "The US would not support an Israeli counter-strike. The US does not want an escalation in view of the situation where more and more crises are emerging on the world stage." The only problem is that if Iran's strike on Israel goes unanswered, the Israelis will be the losers in the Arab world.
The world is eagerly awaiting Israel's response
This means that the Iranians have practically achieved a victory. The Israelis must now consider how they will launch a counter-attack. With the means they have, they could hit or even destroy the Iranians' capacities quite effectively from one moment to the next. "But they only have one chance now. If they don't do that or do it in a weakened form, then the Iranians will of course continue and try to further increase their potential." This is the situation that the Israelis now have to assess.
The world is coming apart at the seams
"The world is coming apart at the seams and the Americans are no longer in control. The conflict is the Global North against the Global South with several theaters of war." The problem is that the Americans are weakened domestically due to this "miserable debate" between Trump and Biden and the fight between the Republicans and Democrats. America no longer speaks with one voice. There is a lack of unity.
Americans have lost control
"This system that we had after the end of the Cold War, where the Americans were the only superpower left and ruled virtually alone, has eroded enormously in the last 20 years and there have been signs that the USA is no longer able to keep the world under control." For us, this means "that this world is practically coming apart at the seams and the Europeans are being called upon to take their security policy into their own hands". If Trump wins the election, it is to be feared that the USA will tick Europe off.
