Greece's former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis was supposed to be one of the top speakers at the controversial "Palestine Congress" in Berlin last weekend. But the police intervened. Now the politician is no longer allowed to enter Germany.

Entry bans were also issued against other planned speakers. "In order to prevent anti-Semitic and anti-Israel propaganda at the event, several entry bans have been imposed, including one against Varoufakis," security sources said.

The former finance minister and chairman of the Diem25 party even spoke of a "ban on activity", meaning that he would not be allowed to take part in political events via video link. It was a "ban on all political activity", he wrote on Platform X. In security circles, however, there is only talk of an entry ban. This is regulated by the European Union's Freedom of Movement Act.

Here you can see Varoufakis' tweet.

Trial dissolved
As reported , the German police broke up the "Palestine Congress" on Friday after around two hours. The reason given was a video message from a man who is banned from political activity in Germany for hate speech against Jews. According to the Berlin Senate's internal administration, the groups behind the congress boycott Israel, some of which also deny the atrocities committed by Hamas and refer to terrorists as "resistance fighters".

However, no criminal statements are said to have been made at the beginning of the congress. The organizer stated that he was unaware of the speaker's ban on political activity. The event was originally scheduled to last until Sunday. On Saturday, numerous people demonstrated against the dissolution.
