Sebastian Ofner has reached the round of 16 at the ATP tournament in Barcelona. The Styrian defeated the Russian Pawel Kotow 5:7, 6:3, 6:2 on Monday and will play Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round.
Ofner overcame a daunting task after falling behind and will now face the Greek top star in the second round of the clay court tournament, which has prize money of almost three million euros. Tsitsipas traveled to Barcelona as the Monte Carlo winner, where he had a bye at the start.
"I played against him once, last year in Paris. I think he's in very good form again now, he won the Masters. I can only win no matter what I do," said Ofner about his next task. At the French Open 2023, he lost to Tsitsipas in three sets in the round of 16.
In Barcelona, Ofner wants to make life difficult for the favorite. He will try to show his best tennis. "Why shouldn't I win a match like this? But I have to put in a very good performance." The match against Tsitsipas will not take place until Wednesday.
Sets two and three in commanding fashion
Ofner chased an early loss of serve against Kotow for a long time, managed to make it 5:5 before he had to concede the first set. After that, the 43rd-ranked player in the new world rankings acted according to form and took control of the match against the Russian, who is ranked 26 places behind him. After equalizing the set, the Styrian got the break in the decider to make it 3:1, then had to fight briefly, but was finally on course with the 4:1.

"I had a bit of trouble getting into it in the first set. It's not so easy when you're chasing a break," said Ofner. "But I had the feeling that if I got in and found my game, started serving better, that I could win. That was really good in the second and third sets. It was a good match."
