Scholz gives cannabis tips at Chinese university
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz defended the legalization of cannabis in Germany during his visit to China. Nobody has to smoke weed in Berlin and Co. Scholz himself had "never smoked cannabis in almost 66 years".
The aim of the regulation in force since April 1st is to reduce rather than increase cannabis consumption by removing it from a gray area.
He said this on Monday at Tongji University in Shanghai in response to a question from a student who wants to study in Berlin from September and was concerned about cannabis use there.
Students in great concern
The student wanted to know from the chancellor what he had to bear in mind as a student in Berlin "if I don't want to try cannabis at all and don't want to endanger my own health."
He had read that students in Germany were now growing cannabis in their homes. This is not legal in China. "That's why I'm very worried."

Scholz said the answer was quite simple: "Don't smoke it." He himself is now almost 66 and has "never smoked cannabis". He countered the impression that everyone in Berlin was now walking around with joints: "When you study in Berlin, you can run around all the time and never meet anyone who does that."

Shanghai is the second stop on the Chancellor's three-day visit to China after Chongqing. On Tuesday, he will continue on to Beijing for political talks with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.
