Spire collapsed
Historic stock exchange in Copenhagen on fire
The historic stock exchange in Denmark's capital Copenhagen was engulfed in flames on Tuesday morning. The spire of the building collapsed due to the fire on Tuesday morning, causing enormous damage.
Pictures from Copenhagen show the enormous column of smoke over the city. The flames billowed out of the building for hours, and several streets and the area around the stock exchange were cordoned off.
A wing of the nearby Christiansborg Palace, where several MPs and journalists have their offices, was also evacuated. The castle houses not only the Danish Parliament, but also the Supreme Court and the Ministry of State. The meetings in the plenary chamber and the committee meetings initially took place as planned in Christiansborg on Tuesday, it was reported.
Passers-by burst into tears
The fire department arrived with a large contingent and the extinguishing work is still ongoing. According to the emergency services, around half of the building was engulfed by the fire. The Copenhagen police expect the area to remain cordoned off for some time. Around 120 firefighters and around 60 helpers from the armed forces are on duty, the head of the fire department told the media this morning.
Passers-by even burst into tears at the sight of the burning building, the stock exchange and its striking tower are one of Copenhagen's landmarks.
Work of art saved
The old stock exchange also houses a large art collection, including the work "From the Copenhagen Stock Exchange" by P.S. Krøyer, which was carried away by several people during the fire.
Denmark's Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen expressed his shock at the fire on Tuesday morning. "Terrible pictures from Børsen. So sad. An iconic building that means a lot to all of us. Our own Notre Dame moment," he wrote on the short message service X on Tuesday morning.
The minister compared the fire to a devastating fire in Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. A fire broke out there almost exactly five years ago - on April 15, 2019. The roof was almost completely destroyed. Pictures of the fire went around the world.
Stock exchange is currently being restored
The cause of the fire was initially unclear. The building was completed in 1625 with a church tower and is one of the oldest buildings in Copenhagen.
The stock exchange is currently being restored and is therefore covered in scaffolding. The restoration is intended to correct an improper renovation of the building in the 19th century and restore the façade to its original appearance.
