Around 60 million euros
Vienna is now getting a new streetcar line
Due to the rapid population growth, the city and Wiener Linien are now expanding the public transport system. By 2025, it will be possible to travel directly from Josefstadt to the Nordbahn district on line 12.
Our city is growing faster than ever before. In order to be able to get the increasing number of inhabitants from A to B, the public transport network must also grow with them.
One of the largest urban development areas is now getting a new streetcar line: Line 12, which will connect the Nordbahnviertel with the rest of the city. Public transport councillor Peter Hanke, transport councillor Ulli Sima (both SPÖ) and Wiener Linien boss Alexandra Reinagl presented the public transport extension on Thursday morning in the Remise in Erdberg.
A future district with 10,000 apartments and no less than 20,000 jobs has been under construction for years on the site of the former Nordbahnhof station in the second district. The approximately 2.2-kilometer-long new line will run from Nordbahnstraße (Rebhanngasse stop) via Taborstraße and Vorgartenstraße (U1) to the final stop in Hillerstraße. In the long term, a further extension will also be considered. In addition to five new stops, there will also be a 230 meter long green track. Construction of the Bim is expected to start as early as June 2024, with completion scheduled for fall 2025 - just in time for the next scheduled municipal elections, which are also due to take place in fall 2025.
60 million euros
is the cost of the city's latest public transport project.
The city is certainly spending a lot on its latest public transport project: A total of around 60 million euros is being invested together with Wiener Linien. This includes the new construction of the line, the surface design and the purchase of six Flexity trains, which will then also run on the line.
New streetcars could follow soon
Plans for the next streetcar expansion projects are already underway in the background. In addition to line 27 in Donaustadt, line 72 is to run from the Simmering U3 station to Schwechat. Only the question of financing has not yet been fully clarified. According to City Councillor Peter Hanke, discussions and coordination are ongoing.
