Loss of trust
Will Jenewein become Thomas Schmid for the FPÖ?
FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl is taking the plunge and now also wants a sub-committee on the Egisto Ott espionage case. Of course, this can only be set up after the National Council elections in fall 2024. What role did Blue Party MP Hans-Jörg Jenewein play in the espionage thriller?
In the fall of 2021 - just a few days after the house search - Blue Party MP Hans-Jörg Jenewein immediately suspected who was behind the raid: "This is an act of Turkish revenge," he raged in an interview at the time. Almost three years later, it is clear that this line of defense cannot be upheld and was a typical political diversionary tactic. His chats reveal just how close his contact with the alleged spy Egisto Ott was. But that's not the end of the story: there are another 2500 chats from Jenewein that the U Committee is still waiting for. The scene is very reminiscent of Thomas Schmid's chat-gate. The ÖVP was also shaken by new chats almost every week.
Who is Hans-Jörg Jenewein?
If you ask FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl about Jenewein's role, he always denies that his party colleague was "his right-hand man" or "his man for the rough stuff". But is that really the case? Why did Jenewein, who is also the brother of Kickl confidante Dagmar Belakowitsch, maintain contact with the spy Ott when Kickl was Interior Minister and Jenewein was leader of the parliamentary group in the BVT-U committee? In 2019, the MP was even promoted to security spokesperson.
Why is there a position on Ott's price list with the telltale abbreviation "ongoing support for HJJ"? The assumption is that "HJJ" refers to Hans-Jörg Jenewein. In total, the spy's claims amount to 18,500 euros.
According to the statement published on Tuesday by Ott's legal representatives, there had never been any cash flows or other benefits to Ott, whom Jenewein had met in the summer of 2018. The FPÖ also denies that there were any cash flows.
Mutual job offers
According to Jenewein, the contact between him and the double agent Ott was only "loose". However, after Jenewein left politics, he received a job offer from Ott at the former German payment service provider Wirecard. Jenewein did not deny this offer. However, at the time of Ott's proposal in the fall of 2019, all that was known about Wirecard was "that it would be a 'financial services provider'", according to the lawyers.
Conversely, Jenewein had offered Ott a powerful job if the BVT was restructured (after the house search). "For the FPÖ, it is above all credibility and trust that are at stake. Because even if the case is very convoluted, the bottom line is that the BVT house search was carried out in order to get rid of the undesirables and the jobs were also handed out to each other," says political insider Kathrin Stainer-Hämmerle.
