CL exit! Gündogan criticizes teammates live on TV
Ilkay Gündogan was extremely frustrated after FC Barcelona's bitter Champions League exit. After the clear 4-1 defeat, the German criticized his teammate Ronald Araujo, who was sent off after just half an hour, live on TV.
After the 3:2 away win in Paris, FC Barcelona also took an early 1:0 lead in the second leg. However, a red card for defender Ronald Araujo for an emergency brake turned the game around, which ended in a 4:1 victory for the Parisians.
Ilkay Gündogan was not sparing in his criticism of Araujo after the game. "It's difficult to say it ... but in those decisive moments you have to be sure you hit the ball," he said of his teammate on CBS Sports. "I don't know if he touches the ball or not. But I prefer to concede a goal or even allow a one-on-one. I don't know if he gets to the ball or not, but I give the goalkeeper the chance to hold the shot. Or I concede a goal."
"We can't let him shoot"
With ten men, Barcelona had no chance after the half-time break. "When you play with one man less so early on, the game is over," complained Gündogan, who was also annoyed when Vitinha conceded the goal to make it 2-1. "You have to go out there and push him away. We can't let him shoot, he was completely free. It's not something we haven't practiced. The player closest to the ball has to go out and push him away."
Yellow card instead of penalty
Not only the performance of some of his teammates, but also that of referee Istvan Kovacs left the DFB kicker shaking his head. In the 64th minute, Gündogan was brought down in the penalty area - but there was no whistle.
"The opponent clearly blocked me. I told the referee that it was a penalty and instead I got a yellow card," Gündogan grumbled. An evening to forget for the Catalans ...
