Several options
After the Iran attack: how Israel could retaliate
Following the massive attack with missiles and drones from Iran, the Israeli government is now threatening to retaliate in a timely manner. "Iran has changed the modus operandi, the previous rules of the game," says Lieutenant Colonel Christoph Göd in the krone.tv talk. There are several options for possible counterattacks. Nevertheless, both sides could sell the attack as a success.
The Iranians had taken a calculated risk, according to the lieutenant colonel. "The attack was certainly not designed to fail." It was therefore not expected that the interception rate would be as high as it actually was. 99 percent of the drones and missiles were intercepted by allies.
Deterrence potential necessary
Both sides could actually sell the attack as a success, says Göd. "Iran can show that they have taken revenge for the attack in Damascus. And the Israelis could actually just as easily say that they have achieved a success here by intercepting so much." Nevertheless, it is important for Israel to create a so-called deterrent potential against Iran in order to prevent further attacks in the future. There are several options here.
Attack on military facilities
At the upper end of the escalation spectrum would be a direct attack on Iranian territory, for example on nuclear facilities. "However, this would be a very complex attack that would require the support of the USA on the one hand, but also of third countries when it comes to overflight rights." However, this case is rather unlikely, as the USA has publicly stated that it will not allow this. "What remains as a target would therefore be military facilities such as the Revolutionary Guards or army or naval facilities."
Attacks on representatives of Iran, the so-called proxies, are seen in the middle spectrum. These could be proxies such as Hezbollah in Lebanon or forces in Syria and Iraq. "The revolutionary forces of the Revolutionary Guards stationed there, so to speak." At the lower end of the spectrum, the expert sees measures in the area of cyberattacks against Iran or measures aimed at disinformation or destabilizing the regime by supporting the opposition.
