Tsunami warning after volcanic eruption in Indonesia

Following the eruption of the Ruang volcano in Indonesia, the authorities have issued the highest alert level and warned of a possible tsunami.

The Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center (PVMBG) warned that parts of the volcano could fall into the sea and trigger high tidal waves. Thousands of people were evacuated to safety. Authorities also evacuated the inmates of the prison located there. The prison is located directly opposite the volcano.

Clouds of rock hurled 3000 meters into the sky
On Wednesday, the 725-metre-high mountain of fire hurled clouds of ash and rock 3,000 meters into the sky. The authorities imposed an exclusion zone within a radius of six kilometers around the crater. Ash and stones also fell on the island of Tagulandang, five kilometers away, injuring residents there.

Tsunami possible
Volcanic eruptions have the potential to trigger tsunamis with devastating consequences, the Indonesian news agency Antara quoted a spokesman for the state Center for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) as saying. These would be caused by the collapse of the flanks of a volcano - or, in the worst case, the entire mountain. This could result in meter-high tidal waves.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) warned that parts of the volcano could fall into the sea and trigger high tidal waves - including a tsunami. The communities on the island of Tagulandang "must be prepared for the possible emission of red-hot rocks, hot clouds and tsunamis that could be caused by the volcanic mass falling into the sea," explained the director of the Indonesian Volcanology Agency, Hendra Gunawan.

Airport closed
On Thursday, the airport in Manado, the provincial capital of North Sulawesi, was closed as a precautionary measure. Flights between the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur and the states of Sarawak and Sabah on the island of Borneo were also canceled.

Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the most geologically active zone on earth. Volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are not uncommon. More than 150 years ago, the Ruang triggered a violent tsunami. The natural disaster in 1871 killed 400 people.
