C3 Aircross: Citroën promises competitive price for SUV
Stellantis continues to reach into the Group's toolbox. After the name debacle with the Alfa Romeo but-not-Milano and the dispatch of the first pictures of the new Opel Frontera, Citroën is now showing the new C3 Aircross for the first time. This is the Frontera's cousin, if not brother, and is set to shake up the price structure in the B-SUV market.
The French brand wants to "shake up the market with a very attractive price positioning", as it is also doing with the e-C3 electric car, which is priced from 24,900 euros (although this was originally almost a thousand euros less) and will later come in a version around 20,000 euros.
The C3 Aircross is basically the long version of the C3, at least 4.39 meters long. Quite a lot for a vehicle that wants to be in the B segment. The predecessor measured just 4.16 meters from bumper to bumper. The C3 Aircross will even have seven seats - a "first in this segment", as Citroën puts it. An easy thing to do when you break the segment. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how spacious the third row, which consists of two seats that retract into the trunk, will be.
Incidentally, the current Citroën C3 is only a touch longer than four meters - that's B-segment!
The range of engines includes all drive concepts available on the Smart Car platform: Internal combustion, hybrid and electric. Specific details have not yet been revealed, but we can assume a 101 hp turbocharged petrol engine with a six-speed gearbox, a 136 hp 48V mild hybrid with a dual-clutch gearbox and an electric drive with an output of 156 hp. The 113 hp electric motor of the Citroën C3 is unlikely to be a problem for customers given the size of the vehicle.
Depending on the equipment level, two battery types will probably be used: On the one hand, as in the C3, a lithium iron phosphate battery as basic equipment and a more powerful nickel-manganese-cobalt battery, which, according to speculation in the French media, should enable a range of up to 400 kilometers.
Although Citroën has not yet published any pictures of the interior, the most important elements from the C3 will probably also be found in the Aircross version. This presumably includes the absence of a classic instrument cluster in front of the steering wheel. Instead, a new type of head-up display, which projects the driving data onto a shiny black area between the upper edge of the dashboard and the lower edge of the windshield, provides information. And as with the C3, a centrally positioned screen will also supplement the information department in the Aircross.
Market launch in summer.
