Sabitzer’s sad gesture of celebration: what’s behind it
Marcel Sabitzer fired Borussia Dortmund into the semi-finals of the Champions League with his goal against Atletico Madrid - and was visibly jubilant. But there was obviously more to the celebratory gesture. The ÖFB team player was mourning together with his fiancée Katja Kühne, who had recently lost her 18-year-old son.
Sabitzer scored in the 74th minute to make the final score 4:2 against Atletico. Before that, the midfielder had already shone with two assists. As he celebrated the goal, the 30-year-old raised his index finger and looked up to the sky. An emotional gesture that his fiancée Katja Kühne was no doubt watching at home. The former "Bachelor" winner recently lost her 18-year-old son from a previous relationship.
"For Lucas"
When Sabitzer posted a picture of the Champions League gala evening on Instagram, Kühne also commented: "For Lucas". She colored her profile picture black. In her status, she posted two white doves with her son's name in between.
And Sabitzer is with her during this difficult time; the BVB professional had already made the pointing finger gesture at the weekend in the league match against Borussia Mönchengladbach, in which he scored two goals.
Sabitzer and Kühne have been a couple since May 2017 and got engaged in January 2020. Their daughter Mary Lou was born at the end of April 2019.
