Work on the Klammsee
Excavators fight against reservoir muck in Kaprun
The sludge has been piling up at Klammsee since the sluices of the Kaprun reservoirs were opened. Another landfill site is urgently needed for the sedimentary rock that has been washed down into the valley.
The gorge lake is idyllically situated at the upper entrance to the Sigmund-Thun gorge in Kaprun. The local recreation area and nature trail around the lake is a popular excursion destination for tourists and locals alike. However, a visit to the small, artificially dammed lake is currently not recommended. Excavators and trucks are busy on the banks of the Klammsee.
Up to 15 trucks are on the road every day
Since the floodgates of the Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden reservoirs were opened in December, the valley has been dominated by water and sedimentary rock. At least 13 Kaprun residents probably had water in their cellars due to high groundwater levels and the well-filled Kapruner Ache - the "Krone" reported.
Work is being carried out on a piecework basis at Klammsee. Excavator arms circle in the air and plunge into the mud-grey water. The machines remove the sediment from the water. Up to 15 trucks travel back and forth between the lake and the landfill site every day. The local recreation area and the adjacent gorge are anything but ready for those seeking relaxation.
A second landfill is needed
Verbund expects around 80,000 cubic meters of sedimentary rock to be washed away with the Kapruner Ache during the emptying process and end up in the gorge lake. Tens of thousands of cubic meters of dirt are not even down yet. The approved landfill site at the Rauriserhöhe quarry in Taxenbach is already full. An interim storage facility has to be accessed by two dump trucks. Another landfill site is already under negotiation.
