The Ukrainian air defense has reportedly shot down a long-range strategic bomber of the Russian air force for the first time. The bomber crashed over Russia early on Friday morning, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense due to a "technical malfunction".

The Tu-22M3 heavy bomber was carrying Kh-22 cruise missiles, which are used for attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine, the Ukrainian air force said on Telegram. Two of these missiles were destroyed together with the bomber in cooperation with the HUR military intelligence service. The latter published a video of the mission (see above)

Crashed 300 kilometers from the border
The Russian Ministry of Defense had previously reported that the Tupolev aircraft had probably crashed in the southern Russian region of Stavropol - around 300 kilometers from the Ukrainian border - due to a technical fault. The ministry announced that the four pilots had ejected from the plane. Three of them had been rescued. A search was underway for the fourth pilot. He was killed in the crash, reported the Moscow Times, citing Russian authorities.

"A Tu-22M3 aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces has crashed while returning from a combat mission to its base in the Stavropol region. The pilots ejected using the ejection seat," according to the Russian side. The plane had no ammunition on board. The aircraft was apparently involved in the night-time attacks on Ukraine.

Heavy attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure
According to the authorities, Ukrainian infrastructure objects were again heavily bombarded from the air on Friday night. The industrially important Dnipropetrovsk region in southern Ukraine was hit particularly hard. According to the Interior Ministry, at least two people were killed and 16 injured in the regional capital of Dnipro. A five-storey residential building and two infrastructure objects were hit, Governor Serhiy Lysak announced on Telegram. The state-owned company announced that Ukrainian railroad facilities had been targeted. The main railway station in Dnipro has been closed and long-distance trains have been rerouted.

According to Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, six people were killed in the town of Synelnykowe, including two children. Several single-family homes were hit. According to the authorities, a factory was damaged in Pavlohrad and an infrastructure building in Krivyi Rih. President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on Telegram that the skies over Ukraine could be defended just as well as the skies over Israel if foreign partners supplied the weapons.

According to Governor Lysak, the air defense over the Dnipropetrovsk region was able to shoot down nine Russian missiles, but not all of them. Since Soviet times, Dnipro and other cities in the region have been home to aircraft and missile manufacturing and other arms factories. In the south, the Dnipro River forms the front line to the attacking Russian troops. They fired artillery across the river into the district of Nikopol, according to Lysak.

There were also reports of explosions during the night in the Odessa region on the Black Sea due to the use of anti-aircraft fire. According to the Ukrainian air force, the city was attacked with missiles from the sea. During the night, Russia attacked Ukraine with 22 guided missiles and 14 drones. All Shahed drones and 15 missiles were destroyed.

Meanwhile, the governor of the southern Russian border region of Belgorod reported that 25 Ukrainian drones had been shot down. The attacks were aimed at the region's capital of the same name, explained Vyacheslav Gladkov. Several buildings were damaged, but there were no injuries or fatalities.

Attacks almost every night
Ukraine has been fending off a Russian invasion for more than two years. Almost every night, the Russian army attacks targets in the Ukrainian hinterland with missiles and combat drones. Ukraine rarely provides information about hits on military targets, but the shelling systematically destroys energy supplies and infrastructure facilities and hits many other civilian targets.
