What does "solitaire" mean
The term "patience" means patience and perseverance in French, while "solitaire" means alone. And that's exactly how the game works: you play alone, without other players, and you need a lot of patience. It's a battle against the computer, a mental exercise in which you have to completely solve a distribution of cards.
From fine hand-painted cards and established printing to the computer
Playing boards, tokens, dice and calendar cards were known in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. However, playing cards made of paper and cardboard are much younger and were first mentioned in China and Japan in the 12th century. They finally reached Europe via India, Persia and the Arab world, where they first appeared as playing cards in the 14th century.
The origin of solitaire games, also known as solitaire or patience, is not fully known. Some researchers suspect France as the origin, while others see Germany or Scandinavia. Allegedly, a French nobleman started playing solitaire while awaiting execution during the French Revolution. This card game also became a popular pastime among fellow prisoners and over time it found its way into the drawing rooms, where even the wealthy have enjoyed playing it ever since.
The 1980s saw the start of Solitaire's impressive success, which is directly linked to the development of the first PC. To better understand the connection, let's take a closer look: Solitaire has a specific system of card distribution. When distributing the playing cards, it is therefore important to follow certain rules, which takes a lot of time and possibly reduces the fun of playing. This is exactly where the innovative technology of the PC comes into play, as the computer takes over the task easily and always correctly. One click and the correct card on the talon pile is revealed, so that the online player only has to drag each playing card to the right place with a click of the mouse. So the effort disappears and all that remains is the fun of the game!
Even back then there were great digital versions of Solitaire for the C64 or Amiga 500, but the big breakthrough only came with the development of Microsoft's operating system. When they were working on Windows 3.0, they decided to add a few games to the basic version. Solitaire was one of the games chosen. Today you have the opportunity to play solitaire online, no matter where you are!

How to play free solitaire online
Solitaire has several other versions in addition to the classic version, such as classic solitaire, also known as Klondike, FreeCell Solitaire, which is usually solvable, and Spider Solitaire, in which you play with 104 cards instead of the classic 52. However, the rules of the solitaire games are all the same:
- Solitaire is a popular card game that you can play anytime, anywhere. The aim of the game is to remove all the cards from the playing field and place them in ascending order on the four target piles or ace piles.
- You play classic solitaire with a French deck, i.e. with 52 playing cards.
- In Solitaire online, the cards in the tableau must be stacked in descending order (King Queen Jack 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 Ace) and alternating colors. Only place the king on an empty pile.
- The faster you finish the game, the more points you score in Solitaire. Each card on a foundation pile gives you additional points.
- If you get stuck in Solitaire online, various help functions can help you. You can display possible moves or draw three new cards. The back button gives you the opportunity to try out alternative moves and solutions. However, it is important to note that the help function entails time penalties and point deductions. Therefore, only use it if it is really necessary to save time and points.
- To win the level in Solitaire online, you must successfully place all cards on the four foundation piles. If you manage to do this, you have successfully mastered the game!
Solitaire online is available from us completely free of charge. With just a few clicks and without downloading or registering, you can get straight into the game and start sorting the playing cards. If you get stuck, various help options offer enough scope for correction and support so that you can continue to enjoy the game.
You can discover other solitaire variants online, such as FreeCell or Spider Solitaire, but on the Krone Playground you can play solitaire the way you are used to with real playing cards.
