"Decision of the heart"
But not Bayern! Nagelsmann remains DFB coach
Julian Nagelsmann will remain German national coach and will not move to FC Bayern Munich! His new contract with the DFB runs until after the 2026 World Cup.
The DFB announced on Friday - 56 days before the opening match of the European Championship against Scotland on June 14 in Munich - the early extension of the 36-year-old's contract until 2026. Nagelsmann will therefore not be returning to FC Bayern Munich, at least not any time soon. At the German record champions, he had been considered a hot candidate to succeed Thomas Tuchel, with whom Bayern will end their collaboration prematurely at the end of the season. Munich will now have to come up with something. Roberto De Zerbi from Brighton is now likely to be the top target.
"This is a decision of the heart. It is a great honor to be able to coach the national team and work with the best players in the country. With successful, passionate performances, we have the chance to inspire an entire country. The two victories against France and the Netherlands in March gave us a taste of this," said Julian Nagelsmann.
The national coach continued: "I was very touched by the enthusiasm of the fans. Together we now want to play a successful home European Championship, that's what we're all burning for. After that, I'm really looking forward to the challenge of the World Cup together with my coaching team."
"Planning security"
DFB President Bernd Neuendorf spoke of a "strong signal for the DFB and the national team" to have won Nagelsmann over. "Because he is on the wish list of many big clubs throughout Europe." Now there is "planning security and everyone can concentrate fully on a successful performance at the European Championship".
The DFB leadership has managed to establish continuity in the management of the national team in a short space of time. Just eleven days ago, the association also extended the contract with team director Rudi Völler until after the 2026 World Cup. The 64-year-old was instrumental in bringing Nagelsmann to the DFB last September. "We were already absolutely convinced by Julian Nagelsmann before the recent successful international matches. But they have once again shown the enthusiasm that Julian and his team can reignite in Germany. He is an outstanding coach, a tactician," said Völler. With his passion, he could "infect and inspire every player. He burns for the national team and for success."
Mood swing before the home European Championship
Nagelsmann took over from Hansi Flick last fall. After a mediocre start, Nagelsmann managed to create a change in mood ahead of the European Championship with a radical squad rebuild and the two test match victories against France (2-0) and the Netherlands (2-1) during Toni Kroos' successful comeback in the national team. In addition to Scotland, the DFB team's other group opponents are Hungary and Switzerland.
