Coup failed
Bayern players prevented Rangnick’s appointment
As one coach after another turns Bayern down, the number of candidates at Säbener Straße is steadily decreasing. Ralf Rangnick is also likely to remain loyal to the Austrian national team and not move to Munich. It is already the second time that a deal with the 65-year-old has fallen through.
Rangnick's name is said to have been on FC Bayern's wish list as early as 2019, according to German newspaper "Sportbild". According to the report, the record champions had considered the long-serving Bundesliga coach (Schalke, Hoffenheim, Leipzig, among others) as the successor to Niko Kovac.
No desire for Rangnick
Why did the transfer ultimately fail? A group of leading players are said to have knocked on the door of Bayern bosses to advise them against signing Rangnick. However, the report does not reveal the reason for this or the names of the professionals.
Rangnick is unlikely to sign a contract this summer either, as he recently stated at a meeting of the European Championship team bosses: "I still have a contract until 2026 and our goal and our path will continue after the Euros." Bayern's current coach Thomas Tuchel will leave the club at the end of the season, having only signed as a replacement for Julian Nagelsmann in Munich last year.
