For seats and wheels
More space on trains between Munich and Salzburg
Passengers on regional trains from Munich via Rosenheim to Salzburg and Kufstein should have a better chance of finding seats from 2028.
Railroad companies applying to operate on the lines in Upper Bavaria would have to provide more seats outside of peak times on weekdays and at weekends in some cases "as well as selectively more space for bicycles than before", the Bayerische Eisenbahngesellschaft (BEG) announced on Friday.
No additional connections
The reason for this is the high demand on the routes, said Bavaria's Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter (CSU). The spokesman for the BEG management, Thomas Prechtl, said that the number of passengers on regional trains had "increased significantly at certain times". With more space, the BEG wants to "be prepared for the continuation of the Deutschlandticket and the current development of population figures in the region". However, additional connections are not planned, according to the information provided.
Trains operated by Bayerische Regiobahn (BRB), which belongs to the French Transdev Group, are currently running there. In the most recent punctuality statistics, the BEG certified that the rail company has the second-lowest punctuality in regional transport in Bavaria after "Alex Nord" on the route bundle that has now been put out to tender. According to the statistics, only around three quarters of all trains were on schedule there in 2023. The main reasons for this were slow stops and missed stops.
Decision by the end of the year
According to BEG, railroad companies can apply to operate on the route network until October 21. BEG expects to make a decision by the end of 2024. As a state-owned company, it plans, finances and controls regional and suburban rail services in Bavaria on behalf of the Ministry of Transport.
