Was still in favor in 2020
CSU leader Söder: “The ban on combustion engines is wrong”
In autumn 2020, CSU leader Markus Söder spoke out in favor of a ban on the registration of cars with petrol or diesel engines from 2035. Now - two months before the EU elections - he is backtracking. "The ban on combustion engines is wrong and must therefore be withdrawn," said the Bavarian Minister President.
"Our car manufacturers are world leaders in the construction of combustion engines. It is therefore downright absurd to shut down a functioning technology and leave it to other countries in future," said Söder in an interview with the "Bild" newspaper, which was published on Saturday.
With this statement, Söder, who in 2020 had described the Californian path - in the US state, the boom in electric cars has already led to a reduction in CO₂ emissions - as a good idea, is turning against his compatriot, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who is hoping for a second term in office. She also rowed back in February and declared that the industry should be able to choose where it wants to invest and what it sees as the mobility of the future.
Wants greater support for electric cars
Söder is now calling for greater support for electric cars instead of a ban on vehicles with combustion engines. "Instead of banning and cutting back, we need to allow and promote. The federal government must therefore reintroduce the premium for electric cars. We must not weaken our most important economic sectors, we must strengthen them," he told Bild.
Only 61% of Germans in favor of a ban on combustion engines
The fact that Söder is backtracking on the ban on combustion cars is probably due to survey results. According to a survey conducted by the German market and social research institute INSA for "Bild", 61% of Germans are against the ban on combustion cars from 2035, with just under a quarter (24% to be precise) in favor.
The EU had agreed in 2022 that no new cars that run on petrol or diesel should be registered from 2035. The agreement at the time stipulated that a review would take place in 2026. The plans caused a stir at the time, with Germany and Austria opposing them.
E-car no longer automatically climate-neutral
In February, the European Parliament also approved a Commission proposal by a majority for the first time, which no longer automatically declares e-cars to be climate-neutral vehicles ...
