Royal "bombshell"
Prince and Princess are divorcing after 14 years
End of marriage in the former Greek royal family: Prince Nikolaos of Greece and Denmark (54) and Princess Tatiana (43) are surprisingly divorcing after almost 14 years of marriage. "Out of the blue", Greek media report in shock.
The decision was amicable, the family announced on their website on Friday afternoon. The monarchy in Greece was abolished following a referendum in 1974.
The decision to divorce had been taken "with great care and mutual respect" and reflected the deep appreciation for each other and for their life together, the statement continued.
Greek media speak of a "bombshell"
Greek media wrote of a "bombshell" and a decision "out of the blue". The family, on the other hand, emphasized good cooperation in their statement and asked for respect for the couple's privacy.
The couple's future interactions will "continue to be guided by the same principles of respect and mutual understanding" and the relationship will be "based on a strong friendship".
Prince arrived in a fishing boat
Nikolaos and Venezuelan-born Tatiana Blatnik want to continue living in Greece, the country they both call home. The couple have no children.
The couple tied the knot on the Greek island of Spetses in 2010. The prince arrived at the church in a small traditional fishing boat. Tatiana rode in a carriage and wore a white lace wedding dress.
Prince Nikolaos is the son of the last King of Greece, Constantine II, who died in January 2023, and his wife Anne-Marie of Denmark.
The last time he appeared together with his soon-to-be ex-wife was at a funeral service for the late king at Windsor Castle in the UK.
William canceled funeral service
The memorial service had made headlines because the heir to the British throne, Prince William, was due to give the reading, but excused himself at the last minute because his wife Princess Kate was supposed to have been diagnosed with cancer that day.
The British royal family is closely related to the Greek royal family through Prince Philip, who died in 2021.
The husband of Queen Elizabeth II, who died the year after him, was born on June 10, 1921, the youngest child of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg at Mon Repos Castle on the Greek island of Corfu.
