Wiener of the week
Giving patients hope through cancer research
The doctor Maximilian Hochmair is a lung cancer specialist at the Floridsdorf Clinic and co-author of an international study looking at better chances of recovery after chemotherapy. The remarkable results were published in a renowned specialist journal.
Lung cancer is the world's deadliest cancer - around 5000 people are diagnosed with it every year in Austria alone. Around 4000 patients die from this insidious disease every year. Patients with early-stage lung cancer also have a high risk of relapse - but now there are better chances. Our Wiener of the week has also contributed to this!
ALK-positive lung cancer
Doctor Maximilian Hochmair is a pulmonologist and lung cancer specialist at the Floridsdorf Clinic and co-author of an international study that has now been published in the world-renowned "New England Journal of Medicine". The researchers looked at patients with so-called ALK-positive lung cancer. "Patients with ALK-positive lung cancer have usually never smoked. They are on average 45 to 50 years old and literally no longer understand the world when they are confronted with this diagnosis," says Hochmair.
Hope for patients
Targeted drug treatment after surgery compared to chemotherapy greatly reduces this risk, according to the key findings of the studies. The important work of doctors like Hochmair gives hope to many cancer patients. He is therefore rightly our Wiener of the Week.
