"The sting runs deep"
Eberl talks about Zidane and Nagelsmann’s rejection
Who will be the new Bayern coach? Sports boss Max Eberl revealed details of the talks for the first time on the sidelines of Munich's Bundesliga match against Union Berlin on Saturday.
"I wouldn't call it a refusal right now," said Eberl in an interview with Sky when asked about the negotiations with Julian Nagelsmann. "It's clear that we have to talk to coaches in order to find a coach. We have a list. That was also the case with Julian. But at some point we realized that the sting from back then is still deep, the separation is still very fresh. That would be too early for his perception and that's okay."
Did Matthäus expose sports boss Eberl?
That's why Thomas Tuchel's predecessor decided against becoming his successor - and instead opted to extend his contract as Germany's national coach. But who is now number 1 on Bayern's wish list? Is it Zinedine Zidane?
Eberl: "The coach doesn't have to speak German. But he should speak English." Sky presenter Sebastian Hellmann interjects: "So that would rule Zidane out, he doesn't speak English." Eberl counters: "I don't know if Zidane can speak English." Expert Lothar Matthäus smells a rat and reveals: "If he doesn't know, then he hasn't spoken to him." Eberl grins and says: "Lothar has drawn the right conclusion."
"The respect is great"
Is it all just a bluff - or is there more to it? One thing is certain: Bayern actually want to introduce their new coach in April. Eberl: "Bayern is a big club. You notice that in every conversation. There is often a lot of respect from the other party. It's also an opportunity to change a few things as you wish at such a big club. We want, we need 100 percent support."
