A trophy for the history books without a toothbrush

West Wien became the first second division team to win the Austrian Handball Cup. Thanks to a super goal in the last second, they won the final at Schwaz 29:28! It goes without saying that coach Roland Marouschek and Co. were over the moon: "This is simply sensational. The boys did incredibly well."

One last (free) throw. And suddenly this: Meleschnig passes to Pfeifer, who passes to Dräger - and the latter scores a "flyer" goal to win 29:28.

Madness! West Vienna actually won the ÖHB Cup against Final 4 hosts Schwaz on Saturday. As the first second division team in Austrian handball history - and as the clear underdog against the HLA top team, only ousted from the basic round victory in the last round. "I can't believe it, it's simply sensational," beamed coach Roland Marouschek, nine of whose 16 aces are still eligible to play at U18 level. "With this in mind: kids take over!" His boy group was always ahead thanks to 42-year-old goalkeeper Uvodic (who had a 55% defense rate at times) and was still +3 (28:25) with 1:45 minutes to go - before two 2-minute penalties left them with just four outfield players and they tied the scores at 28:28. "I thought we were letting the game slip out of our hands," said captain Paul Pfeifer, sensing a "negative mood". Not at all. Because he was followed by the "winning flyer". "What they've come up with," winked top scorer Clemens Möstl (7), brother of team wizard Consti. "It's simply indescribable."

The "Greens" celebrated their third Cup title in total. Marouschek was also coach of the first two in 1991 and 1992 - after the 2023 championship coup (the Cup ended in the home semi-finals), the successor team also wrote a fairytale. "I didn't expect that for a second. But we were able to play without pressure and did an outstanding job," said Marouschek - Pfeifer: "The aim was to deliver a great semi-final against Graz on Friday. Half of us didn't even have a toothbrush with us," he laughed. "But we stayed cool and cool-headed." Schwaz also offered their congratulations. Team player Michael Miskovez, once with the Viennese: "They were better, respect!"

The "green" party began in the dressing room. Then it was off home on the bus - with the trophy in hand.
