Ampoule found
Boxing: Suspected doping after mass brawl!
After the mass brawl in the boxing ring of the Steffl Arena in Vienna during Mansur Elsaev's European Championship title fight against Carlos Lamela, the next bombshell has now burst: as the "Krone" newspaper has learned, a suspicious ampoule is said to have been found in Lamela's dressing room. The EBU is now investigating a possible doping offense.
The Viennese boxer Elsaev had actually entered the ring as the favorite. But what followed was anything but an "easy match": Lamela, who was born in Cuba and boxes in Spain, challenged the Chechen-born fighter for eleven rounds until he was knocked out in the twelfth round.
Trainer handed out a "slap", followed by pandemonium
Lamela's victory celebrations - he is said to have thrown his hands up in the air and cheered next to his badly injured opponent, who was covered in blood (frowned upon in boxing) - caused emotions to boil over. Elsaev's trainer Isaak Kosashvili admitted to the "Krone" that he then "gave the winner a slap". What followed was a tumult in the ring.
The defeated Mansur Elsaev, who had never lost a professional fight before, is currently recovering in hospital from a concussion and also has a broken hand and nose. Shortly after the fight, voices were raised questioning how Lamela, who was actually considered to be less strong, could have beaten the European title favorite Elsaev so badly.
Ampoule found in the dressing room
Now came the next bombshell in the case. As the "Krone" learned, a suspicious ampoule was found in the winner's dressing room. Lamela had to undergo a doping test, but the results will not be available for a few weeks.
Manuel Traxler, chairman of the Golden Boy Show, the organizer of the fight, confirmed that there were doping proceedings "as substances may have been involved". The European Boxing Union (EBU) will evaluate this and the result will be awaited. The trainer of the defeated Elsaev also confirmed that Carlos Lamela had undergone a doping test - a common procedure in a boxing title fight.
Authorities already alert
Shortly after the fight, posts appeared on social networks linking Lamela to illegal substances - the presumption of innocence applies here, of course. However, as was reported on Sunday evening, the usually well-informed Federal Criminal Police Office is already interested in the suspected doping case ...
