Former world chess champion Magnus Carlsen and others accuse US chess player Hans Niemann of cheating - he is said to have received "Morse code" using an anal bead - but without proof. In an interview on krone.tv, the President of the Austrian Chess Federation (ÖSB), Michael Stöttinger, says: "Niemann was not very well advised by a lawyer". Another case of cheating in chess took place in Kenya in the spring. A player was disguised as a woman. This is also the subject of an interview with Jürgen Winterleitner on krone.tv.

Niemann, who was accused of cheating, then sued Carlsen for 100 million dollars. The lawsuit failed. In an interview on krone.tv, ÖSB President Stöttinger says: "Niemann was not very well advised by a lawyer and the lawyers chose a strategy that was not very viable."

The scam was exposed
At a chess tournament in Kenya this spring, a hitherto little-known type of fraud took place. A man pretended to be a woman and played in the women's group of the tournament. The man wore a hijab (head and shoulder covering), which is typical for a Muslim woman, as well as a nikab (face covering). The hoax was exposed.

Stöttinger is optimistic about the future of chess in Austria. He says: "Austria is a chess country. (...) We also have grandmasters in Austria!" Grandmaster is the highest title in chess. There are around 1000 grandmasters in the world. "Of these grandmasters, around 40 are among the absolute top in the world," says the ÖSB President.
